Feeling lost in the city? Ask a Greek for help! They are believed to have great sense of direction since the ancient years, as Ptolemy had created the ultimate “gadget” of the time, a spherical astrolabe which took his name. The spherical astrolabe of Ptolemy (2nd c. Α.D.) was an exceptional astronomical instrument consisted of seven concentric articulated rings, which depicted the celestial sphere. It was used for the measurement of longitude and latitude of the observed stars from anywhere on Earth, for the measurement of the distance between the sun and the moon, and as locator of position. To make the long story short, that brilliant Greek guy called Ptolemy lead the way in developing the Global Positioning System, aka GPS, as we know it today. If only he had invented satellite too! Today GPS plays a vital role in real-time asset tracking, in flight trafficking, automotive navigation, weather and science applications, and computer & mobile telematics. No wonder Greeks were, and still are, innovative!
